As if 2001, Dindigul town’s urban workforce participation rate is 35.24%. It has registered growth in the tertiary and secondary sectors, with a corresponding diminish in the primary sector (Agriculture). Major employment in the city is catered by hand loom, industrial estates, commerce and trading activities

Nearly, 90% of the workforce is employed in tertiary sector (service industry). This district has two large industrial estates. According to the Indian census 2001, there are nearly 60 tanneries, 165 lock manufacturing units and huge number of cotton spinning mills, Dindingul is also one of the leading manufacturer and supplier of leather.

Locks and steel safes are manufactured and functioned as a co-operative sector. The locks of Dindigul are sold in national and global markets. Silk, blanket, and muslin manufacturing is general in Dindigul district after Coimbatore. Dindigul has second largest textile spindling capacity in the state of Tamil Nadu. Another famous thing is, Chinnalapatti silk, a brand of silk saree is produced out of Chinnalpatti situated 11 KMs away from the city of Dindigul. Here, the climate of the region is suitable for horticulture and agricultural products.

This district also produces non-food crops like, flowers, tobacco, eucalyptus and coffee in large level. It is also the home of wholesale trading of fruits like pineapple, orange, guava and sappota. It also produces Onion in large level. Dindigul was a significant centre of trade in tobacco and production of cigars in the British times. A favorite cigar of Winston Churchill called Churut, the ‘Light of Asia’, was manufactured in Dindigul.

So, here, the Tobacco industry is one of the main sources of employment in Dindigul,Here the central government has a research center for tobacco in Vedasandur,This is one among two centers in India, the other one is Rajamundri.

Currently, it has the largest center in the state for scented betel nuts and chewing tobacco. The most renowned brands of scented chewing tobacco like Roja Supari, Angu Vilas etc. functioned out of the city and sent to many places in the state of Tamil Nadu and outside.
